Chicken Hanmari (Dak Hanmari)

When it comes to winter, I often think of it, and there is a place that I can never leave out. I think it is because of the special sauce and deep flavored soup. This goes very well with soju (Korean alcohol), but even though without soju, it replenishes stamina and energy. I tried alone, alone is ok. and two or three friends or couple is good.

Korean name (pronounciation) is “Dak Hanmari”, it means one(whole) chicken. This restaurant actually serves a whole chicken. There are some reasons and people want that I think.

First impression of the pot and the content chicken may not be the one you expected. I told you they serves a whole chicken. It seems the chicken is biting a piece of potato. Let’s start to boil it.

You might not know, sometimes some dished will be cooked in your table in South Korea.

And now, you should cut and disassemble the chicken using scissors. It is not that difficult because the chicken will be served almost cooked. Normally the cutting is a process of kitchen and chef’s roll. It could be surprise for you. I think there could be two reasons.

One, the restaurant is full almost everytime. So, historically they do not have much time to cut their chicken. This is coincidence with their restaurant name.

Second, you can show your energy and serving mind to your friend while cutting the chicken. It makes you and your friend (or girl friend) close.

Anyway, let’s boil it. while you boil it, you can add some cabbage and rice cake etc.

And now there is a special sauce.

You will get this kind of sauce. You should mix the sauce before use it. When the chicken is boiled and cooked well, you can dip and eat the chicken or just put the sauce in the pot. You can choose. Some people prefer the mild soup and original chicken taste, or others prefer the red colored soup.

I think some people prefer the red soup because they want them as a side dish for the drinking soju.

In the yellow box menu list, there are 11 dishes. From left to right, they are..

  1. a whole Chicken – main menu (essential I think)
  2. additional rice cake
  3. additional green onion
  4. a bowl of rice
  5. additional potato
  6. noodle (amount for 1 person) – the noodle should be ordered with the chicken. (additional noodle order is impossible)
  7. soju
  8. beer
  9. chungha (alcohol made with rice. clean taste)
  10. baek-sae-ju (one hundred years old soju(not real), kind of alcohol – a little bit tradditional)
  11. san-sa-choon (similar to no. 10)

You can add noodle to this soup. Because it will be the deep flavored chicken soup, as a korean’s taste, it is tasty I think.

Today, it is only one bottle of soju.. but the feeling is good. and it is happy that my friend and I become closer today.
